Palm changed the smartphone landscape once again with the release of the Treo Pro, the latest device in a distinguished line of smart devices designed for the business professional. Last year, Palm introduced the Centro, which changed how casual users looked at their wireless phones forever. Small in sized, but packed with the power of the legendary Palm OS, the Centro became an instant hit and recently passed the 2 million mark in number of devices shipped. It was obvious to Palm that the form factor of the Centro has been its appeal, so Palm wasted no time in bringing a sleek, Centro-sized device to the Treo family, the Treo Pro, which runs on the Windows Mobile platform. What separates Treo from Centro is mostly indistinguishable to the casual user. It is the hard core business professional who requires the subtle differences the Treo provides its users. In the case of Treo Pro, it brings all the power and functionality of Windows Mobile 6.1 to a device the size of Centro. What busy professionals have as an option now with Treo Pro is to carry the unique features of Windows Mobile as only Palm can offer, combined with the latest features of Treo 800w, including WIFI and GPS and other 3G technologies. The Treo Pro is GSM only at this time, which makes it truly a world-class phone that will even work in unusually difficult places for U.S. phones to operate, like Japan and Korea. In this day and time when nearly all wireless devices in the marketplace offer the same features, Palm continues to deliver the devices that stand out from the crowd when it comes to ease of use, available features and value. All I can say is I can't wait to get my hands on a Treo Pro. Palm Treo 800w Is Now Available At Sprint The much awaited Treo 800w, with integrated WiFi, broadband speed data network and GPS is now available on the Sprint network. The smartphone runs on Windows Mobile 6, and has many upgrades to the ease-of-use features that have set Treo apart from other smartphones on the market. Released just one week after the Apple iPhone, the device will continue to offer productivity and other features that appeal to business users, beyond those of the iPhone 3G, which did make some improvements to attract business savvy users. To see the specs on the new Palm Treo 800w, go to the Palm website or visit Sprint.com. Is "free" your favorite four-letter word? Who spends more time surfing the Web from their smartphone, the British or Americans? According to a recent survey from M:Metrics, Americans are using smartphones to check out what's happening on the Internet almost twice as much as our friends across the Atlantic (4.6 hours compared to 2.5 hours per month). One of the biggest reasons for more Web surfing in the U.S. is that more Americans have "unlimited" data plans. Interestingly, M:Metrics also draws a link to the greater popularity of smartphones with QWERTY keyboards in the U.S. as a reason for the higher usage rates. So what are the most popular web sites for people to visit on their smartphones? In the U.S., it's all about the shopping for previously owned goods and connecting with friends: * Craigslist.org (1 hour 38 minutes per month) * eBay.com (1 hour 25 minutes per month) * MySpace.com (1 hour 25 minutes per month) * Facebook.com (1 hour 24 minutes per month) * Go.com (1 hour 7 minutes) In Great Britain, people are also getting their fill of social networking and keeping up to speed on the latest happenings around the globe: * Facebook.com (1 hour 44 minutes per month) * Three.co.uk (1 hour 15 minutes per month) * Sky.com (1 hour 15 minutes per month) * Live.com (1 hour 11 minutes per month) * BBC.co.uk (48 minutes per month) Check out the release for additional details. -Paul Loeffler, The Official Palm Blog Do You have ICE in your phone? This is not some new way of blinging out your phone, rather an important addition to your contacts. In fact, once you've ICE'd your phone, tell everyone else you know who has one that it's time to ICE. What is ICE? Glad you asked. In Case of Emergency (ICE) is a place to store emergency contact infprmation should you be in an accident and cannot speak for yourself. Emergency medical personnel are trained to look for your wireless phone, and hope that you've ICE'd it. If you're using a smartphone, take it a step further by adding medical infoprmation such as allergies, blood type, medications, etc that could help paramedics save your life. ICE YOUR PHONE TODAY! Palm Centro Soon Available At Verizon? Verizon Wireless customers will soon be able to take part in the latest smartphone rage, the Palm Centro. The device was exclusive to Sprint until recently, when it was released to AT&T in a new color, Glacier White, a ruby red and Obsidian black, I'm not certain what or when the Centro will be offered to Verizon customers, but the buzz is in the air. Still Looking For A Great Gift To Send To A Soldier? I have an idea for the ultimate gift for a friend or family member deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, or anywhere else in the world they are preserving freedom. First, buy a Palm handheld, either a Tungsten E2 or the TX. Also purchase an SD memory card for added storage. Next, take the handheld home, charge it up and then load it up with photos, video, music and games from home. Install as much as the device can hold. Trust me, with as little as a 1GB card, you could send no less than a thousand photos! This is the ultimate care package from home to a loved one so far away and missing so many special occasions. This is your opportunity to send them images and video of those moments, and the added benefits of a PDA:
If you know of someone who would appreciate a little bit of home, this is a way to send a one-of-a-kind, and very imaginative gift. Just as of Wednesday, when I open VersaMail my whole phone reboots. I and a Sprint Technician have done a hard reset (wiping everything from the phone), I took my phone home and re-synced the phone and I still had the same issue, took the phone back to Sprint, they replaced the phone, re-synced the phone again I have the same problem.... Now I have a little technical experience, I think it is software related, however I am not familiar w/ this software....I.E. uninstalling and reinstalling VersaMail, or resetting the settings. Please help. -Margo This problem is a common one and fortunately the answer is a simple one. Here are the instructions straight from the Palm support site: Palm Support Knowledge Library Many of these kinds of issues are solved with an update of your Treo software. To find if there is an update for your Treo, follow these simple steps: *** ALWAYS PERFORM A HOTSYNC OPERATION BEFORE MAKING ANY SOFTWARE CHANGES TO YOUR TREO. *** 1. Press the green phone icon 2. Press the menu key, and the letter "i, for info" on the keyboard ( a bit of Palm mastery) 3. The "Phone Info" screen appears. Under "Software" you will see the version of the software on your Treo. Then, 4. Go to Palm.com/support. 5. Select the correct Treo model and service provider. 6. If there is an update numbered higher than the version you saw on your Treo, follow the steps to update your treo. A Real Estate Agent Asks: I attended William's session at the NAR convention. Great teacher. I have a question about carriers. For use in real estate is one service provider better than another? For example, can Sprint provide more real estate functionality in the Treo 650 than other providers? - Ronn The Treo is a tremendous smartphone from Palm. The service providers (Sprint, Verizon, Cingular, etc.) get the same core device. Each of the major carriers add their "flavor to the device, mostly easy access to email and mobile information via heir networks. As far as one working better than the other when it comes to Real Estate applications, the answer is no. Those software applications respond to the Palm OS, not the service provider. William, Is there a way to move applications off of the Treo and onto the memory card? -Craig The easy way to move applications from the internal memory onto the card is this: 1. From the PDA side of the Treo (tap the "house") press the menu key, then select "copy" from the menu. 2. Set "Copy To" card, or whatever the card is named. "From" will automatically change to the opposite, in this case, Phone. 3. Select by highlighting the application to move, and select "copy" at the bottom of the screen. 4. Verify the copy has been successful, then go back to the menu, select "Delete", and delete from the internal memory. 5. The two-step process serves a fail-safe in case something happens in the transfer. 6. Moving individual files, such as photos to the card and back can be done within it's particular application. Here's One I get quite often via email, and at live events: I have set my VersaMail with my email client. I receive email just fine, but when I try to send, I get nowhere. What should I do? There is no one simple answer to this question, but the solution really is simple. If you have set VersaMail to receive email from your High-Speed Internet provider, AOL, Yahoo, or perhaps your company's email server and cannot receive, try this: 1. Open VersaMail on your Treo 650. On Treo 700p and 680 the application is called Email (same application, though). 2. Tap the Menu key, and scroll right, to "Accounts". (you can also just tap menu and then the letter w on your keyboard). 3. Select the account you wish to edit, then tap "edit" at the bottom of the screen. 4. Make sure each screen is setup properly (if you are receiving mail, its correct). 5. On the "Email Address page, note where it says "Outgoing Mail Server'. 6. Change this information to the smtp address of your service provider. The most common are listed below: Sprint: smtp.sprintpcs.com Requires authentication. You need your Sprint user ID & password. Go to sprintpcs.com/mypcs to set up your password if you have not done so already. AT&T (formerly Cingular) : cwmx.com (no smtp on line). AllTel Wireless: mail.alltel.com Verizon: smtp.vzwmail.net. Requires authentication (ESMTP. Verizon user ID is your mobile number @vzwmail.net (ie 202-555-1212@vzwmail.net) & the verizon password you set up for access to their site www. verizonwireless.com. T-Mobile: myemail.t-mobile.com (no smtp on line). You may not need to enter an SMTP username and password. However, if you're having problems sending, you may need to contact T-Mobile and register your POP server and password. You'll be issued an SMTP username and password for sending emails on T-Mobile's SMTP server. While you're at the T-Mobile website, turn off the Alerts option, or you'll receive SMS messages containing the text of received emails. Please check here at the Palm support site for more information, or for the settings for other carriers. Have a Question? Send it to me here and I'll respond to you personally and post it on the website.z |
